Just days after the East Indian sinking, Edna Hodges received a call from her lawyer. He had finally received a copy of one of R. M. Jenkins’s letters from Havana about the ring in the shark’s belly. On October 22, 1942, Jenkins had written:

I have come in touch with a matter which might be of great sentimental value to some person, and I will explain the matter to you thinking you might care to and be able to contact who might be the interested party. In the vicinity of where the SS Onondaga was torpedoed and several of the crew lost is a great shark fishing ground. Around there for years, a family by the name of Carillo has fished commercially for sharks.

A short time after the sinking of the ship, according to them and as told to me by the one I think the most reliable, they caught a shark that had in its belly the flesh and bones of a human being. They say they took out and saved the bones from the hip to the ankle. Also at the same time they found with the rest two rings. They have shown me the rings and I have carefully examined them.

I thought they would be of interest mainly because the outside initials on the heavy gold signet ring are G.D.H. As it was my understanding that the captain who went down with the ship was G.D. Hodges, it has occurred to me that it might be his ring. On the inside of this same ring it [is] engraved as follows: “E.R.G. ’17.” The bottom of the ring is broken.

The other ring seems to be made of some such material as bone and is of light yellow color with a large dark top imitating a stone of some kind.

If the widow of this good old man who went down with his ship knows this ring, I imagine it would be of great sentimental value to her. I am giving you this information for you to do with as you think best.
